Historical Context
Nearly 220 years ago, Thomas Jefferson created the Corps of Discovery, championing Captain Meriweather Lewis and Lieutenant William Clark to pursue the dual scientific and commercial objectives of studying the new nation's unexplored territories and to map its various resources, including plants, animal life, and geography, and to learn how its new sovereign territories might be responsibly developed. From its earliest beginnings, the Corps' makeup included a diverse team of leading experts, including military officers, frontier scouts, experienced boatmen, and a diverse collection of passionate and experienced civilian volunteers.

Today's leading innovators and explorers recognize that while much of the world's land resources have been catalogued, settled, and developed, there is an entire world covering 73% of the planet's surface that remains largely unknown and unexplored. For many of the same reasons that Jefferson enabled the original Corps of Discovery to map and settle the areas included in the Louisiana Purchase, we see the high seas and their newly defined and largely unexplored exclusive economic zones (EEZ's) as the world's present frontier challenge. Blue Ocean Resources intends to champion and enable the emerging diverse network of marine explorers, scientists, and innovators that are presently engaged of mapping and responsibly developing these vital and prolific ocean resource endowments.

As a Center of Excellence advocating for improved awareness of ocean resource endowments and promoting multi-industry resource innovation projects, we will also become a shared repository of cutting edge Ocean research findings, data collection, educational materials, and multimedia reference resources.
